Shake, stir, slurp and sort - all in the name of charity!

Sunday’s sultry heat was no deterrent for 35 teams from Keys’ bars and restaurants as they competed in the 14th annual Battle of the Bars at Schooner Wharf. Topping last year’s record by a huge margin, the grand total raised for Big Brothers/Big Sisters was close to $18,000.

Excitement was high as the 7-person teams ran the obstacle course – poured a margarita, recycled bottles, rolled and tapped a keg, and drank beer.

Along with a trophy and bragging rights, Half Shell’s “Raw Bar Rehabs” took home the championship title for the second time, with a final round time of 2 minutes, 10 seconds. The “Big Sweaty Conchs” from Conch Republic Seafood Company captured second place. Third place went to “Rum Runners” from Rum Barrel, while the coveted Most Outrageous Costume prize again went to “Sebago’s Southernmost Kham Pai”. Honorable Mentions for costume were awarded to “Sloppy Joe’s Super Heroes”, “Bourbon Street’s Absolut 7”, Schooner Wharf’s “Three-Time Losers”, and Guy Harvey’s “Drunken Dolphins.”

New this year, the Deepest Pockets award went to Irish Kevin’s “Car Bombs”, who registered $3,000 in total donations. Also Hard Rock Café’s Ambassadors of Rock and The Halfshell’s “Raw Bar Rehabs” among many other teams just kept on giving. “Everyone was extremely, extremely generous,” said Evalena Worthington, event organizer.

“It’s a day of fun and hilarity in the name of charity. We are proud to have raised nearly $138,000 for Big Brothers/Big Sisters!” added Evalena. A few Battle of the Bars T-Shirts are for sale at the Schooner Wharf merchandise store, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
