The final race of the 2012 Schooner Wharf
Bar Wrecker's Cup Race Series is here, when captains, crews and passengers
race the seven miles to Sand Key on an annual quest for bragging rights on
this small island.
The "day of wreckoning" is Sunday, April 29th, at 1:00 p.m. when ships in
five different classes will reenact the times in Key West history when
wreckers would race to a disabled ship, rescue the crew and then lay claim
to the cargo. The five classes for the race series are: Classic, Schooner,
Multi-hull, Monohull over 30, Monohull under 30 feet.
Join your friends, captains and mates for a
day of rivalry on the high seas. Local and visiting yachtsman are all
welcome to join the fun.
The entry fee is $30.00, which includes free rum punch and hors d'oeuvres
at the Captain's Meeting on Saturday, April 28th, at 7:00 p.m. on the upper
deck at Schooner Wharf. |

The
Awards Ceremony will take place after the race on Sunday at
7:00 p.m., where all wreckers can feast on a BBQ dinner and share
sailing stories while watching their maritime adventure on a big
screen television. Dance the night away to the reggae and island
rhythms of Marty Stonely and George Victory.
Winners will receive a bottle of Pussers Rum and a souvenir rum
mug along with the antique looking trophies commemorating the
victory, Schooner Wharf bar tabs and Wreckers Race Tee Shirts. All
participating vessels will be eligible to win a great prize in a
free $600 raffle sponsored by West Marine Downtown and Stock
Island. |

But the
crews and captains are not the only ones who can participate in the
fun. The race is a great way for captains to fill their charter boats
for an afternoon sail. As visitors to the island get to take part in a
local adventure, spectators can watch the madness from Schooner Wharf
Bar while getting an up-close look at traditional and majestic wooden
boats. For more information, do not hesitate to call (305) 292-9520.
